Marlborough Pinot Gris

This rich, full bodied Pinot Gris combines the best of the fruit-forward style of Alsace in France, with the crisp, dry style of Italian Pinot Grigio. The result is a stunning wine delivering juicy stone-fruit, apple and spice flavours. The wine has a soft finish – medium dry in style – courtesy of being partially barrel fermented, and not only is it widely considered one of the best New Zealand Pinot Gris produced in recent years, it’s also vegan friendly.

TASTING NOTES

Our Marlborough Pinot Gris has aromas of ginger, pear and Braeburn apple with white floral notes and cinnamon. Fullish and rich on entry with a very smooth progression through the palate to a warm, spicy finish. Fresh fruits, apple and pear, are joined by orange and peach with a crème brûlée note lingering. This wine is widely considered one of the best New Zealand Pinot Gris' produced in recent years.

Fruit was harvested from our Echelon and Cowslip Valley vineyards in the Waihopai Valley and Headwaters vineyard in the Wairau. The fruit spent about 5 hours on skins to extract more flavour and build mouthfeel. While predominately tank fermented, a significant proportion is fermented in seasoned oak barrels to increase complexity.

This Marlborough Pinot Gris works well with snapper fillets, rolled in fresh breadcrumbs and shallow fried, or with hot baked ham and glazed kumara.

"Reasonably complex bouquet with aromas of autumn leaves, stewed windfall apples and with hints of spice, vanilla and lavender. A rich, dry, oily style with good concentration, length and balance."

TASTING NOTES

Classic pear and ginger aromas with white fleshed peach and a hint of rose. Ripe apple on entry mingle with peach and other stone fruits on the lush and textured mid-palate. Juicy and fresh, but plenty of warmth and a long spicy finish.

Parcels were harvested from our Echelon and Cowslip Valley Vineyards in the Waihopai Valley and our Selmes Rd Vineyard in the Wairau. From the Waihopai we get stone fruit, floral notes and concentration. From Selmes Road we get roundness volume and classic pear/ ginger flavours. The fruit spends about 4 hours on skins to extract more flavour and build mouthfeel. While predominately tank fermented, a significant proportion is fermented in seasoned oak barrels to increase complexity.

TASTING NOTES

Aromas of fresh red apples, a touch floral, pretty. Creamy rich and mouth-filling entry with pear and apple dominating. There is a nice structural complexity and a touch of toffee on the lingering spicy finish. A bright and fleshy wine.

Parcels of grapes were harvested from several of our Marlborough vineyards. The vineyards with heavier soils add weight to the wine, whereas the lighter soils bring varietal aromatics. The majority of juice in the winery was fermented in-tank at various temperatures, and with various yeasts to capture varietal character and build interest.

TASTING NOTES

Aromas of ginger, pear and white nectarine with a little green apple in the background. The palate is big rich and succulent with driving fruit - ripe apples, pears and stone fruits. Ginger and a hint of red berries that linger. A generous, warm embracing mouthful.

"The fruity, ripe 2017 Pinot Gris is full-bodied, round and mouth-filling. Pear and guava notes are balanced by hints of grapefruit and lime on the nearly dry finish. It's not that complex, but it offers an appealing silky texture and enough weight to satisfy."
-Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Feb 2018

"Full, even straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues.  The nose is softly full with good depth and presence of white and yellow stone-fruits, along with an amalgam of exotic herbs and rose-petal florals, and subtle notes of honeysuckle and nutty notes.  Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has a subtle, mouth-filling presence with light, lifted flavours of white stone-fruits along with exotic florals and some confectionary and honeysuckle nuances.  The palate is bright and vigorous with fresh underlying acidity, and the wine flows along a very fine-textured line, leading to an elegant, nuanced finish.  This is a delicate flavoured dry Pinot Gris with stone-fruit, floral, confectionary and honeysuckle notes on a palate with good mouthfeel."

"This has a smooth, ripe and attractive array of apples and pears with lightly bready, pastry notes. The palate is smooth, just off-dry and has easy, mellow apple-pastry flavors."
