When you know, you know
The future Mara Babich arrived in New Zealand from Croatia not knowing a word of English.
And naturally, recent immigrants were often drawn to each other. But when Josip Babich’s cousin sent him a telegram persuading him to come and meet a pretty single lady that he knew, Josip probably didn’t realise it would be life-changing. He met Mara and soon after married her, living and working side by side until the day he died, some 60 vintages later.
