Marlborough Riesling

This single vineyard organic Riesling is grown in our Cowslip Valley Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley, Marlborough. This cool, and sometimes frost prone site with moderately fertile silt soils helps to restrict vine vigour and create extraordinarily intense varietal characters with good body and complexity.

TASTING NOTES

White blossom aromas and stone-fruit with lime and a hint of lemon. Sweet lime and orange on entry with nectarine, clover honey and apple joining on the luscious mid-palate. Sweet garden herbs and quince also noted with a strong mineral element on the finish. Juicy and balanced.

We delayed harvest to await the appearance of noble rot. When this was deemed sufficient for the opulent style of wine we required the grapes where picked, quickly pressed and settled. The ferments were halted before complete dryness to retain the level of natural sweetness that perfectly balances the acidity. This was followed by 6 months in seasoned oak barrels on lees.

This Marlborough Riesling is an excellent partner to a wide range of foods, ideal with Asian dishes, or try it with mussel and Kumara patties, drizzled with home-made lime-spiked mayonnaise.

TASTING NOTES

Floral aromas with flavours of lemon, orange and lime - crisp off-dry finish.

These grapes were harvested at low Brix. The free run juice was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks to retain aromatic varietal character, with various different yeasts. The ferments were stopped before completion to retain the level of natural sweetness that perfectly balances the acidity.

An excellent partner to a wide range of foods, ideal with Asian dishes, or try it with mussel and kumara patties, drizzled with home-made lime-spiked mayonnaise.

"Flavoursome riesling with ripe Gala apple, lime zest and subtle floral flavours. The wine shows very pleasing sweet-and-sour tension and has a crisp and moderately drying finish. Accessible now but should develop well in bottle."

TASTING NOTES

The nose is lifted with orange and lime blossom and layered with mineral notes. The palate is finely focused and varietal, again with orange blossom, mineral/slate. Juicy with a dry finish.

"Bright straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, lighter on the rim.  The nose is soft and voluminous with aromas of lime fruit and exotic yellow florals, long with honeied notes, underlined by musk and mineral elements.  Off-dry to taste, the palate has a softly rich core of ripe citrus fruits entwined with notes of exotic florals and honey.  The mouth-feel has light phenolic textures, and some underlying alcoholic power that drives the palate.  The acidity is balanced, providing a subtle, mouthwatering freshness and the wine carries to a light, honeied, dryish finish.  This is a soft, off-dry Riesling with citrus, floral and honeied notes, with botrytis elements on a light, textured palate with good drive. "Quite a ripe medium-dry Riesling with lime, pineapple and apricot flavours plus a suggestion of floral, wild flowers (which make a nice lift with the Cowslip Valley brand). Tangy, fruity acid adds energy and helps drive a lingering finish."

"Bright, light lemon-hued straw-yellow colour with a flash of gold, pale on the edge. The nose is very elegant and finely presented with aromas of lime fruit, yellow florals, a little honey and nuances of toast and minerals. The aromatics build in depth, intensity, harmony and interest with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features softly concentrated flavours of exotic yellow florals lime fruit along with honeysuckle and complexing toast and mineral detail. The mouthfeel is refreshingly bright and lively with crisp, lacy acidity, and the wine follows a very fine-featured, soft line. The flavours carry to a gently rich, sustained finish with interwoven complexing detail. This is a beautifully fine and complex dry Riesling with lime, honey, mineral and toast notes and a refreshing palate."

"The 2015 Family Estates Cowslip Valley Riesling has a nose of lime cordial, lemon drops and pink grapefruit with suggestions of mandarin peel and coriander seed. Light-bodied and dry, it has a good intensity of pure citrus fruit in the mouth with a racy yet approachable backbone of freshness, finishing with some toastiness coming through."

"Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with some green hues. The nose is still youthfully restrained with a concentrated core of lime fruit, green apples and minerals, along with an overlay of free sulphur lending a suggestion of earth and toast. This is very Germanic in style. Dry to taste and light-bodied, elegant flavours of limes and apples show along with a dose of SO2. The flavours are up-front and lacy acidity enlivens the thirst-quenching mouthfeel. The flavours recede as the wine flows, following a dry, textural line to a soft, light finish with apple and mineral nuances. This is a youthful, dry Riesling with lime fruit and a whiff of sulphur that will dissipate over the next 4+ years."

"This wine slid straight into silver with its intense floral aromas, great concentration of flavour, wonderful potential for aging and lightness of body; all the qualities of outstanding Riesling. And this one cruises in, like so many here, at such an affordable price and made in relatively decent quanities. Josip Babich would have been proud of his family, who celebrate 100 years of Babich Wines this year."

"Tight, crisp Riesling with lime, pineapple, apricot and rose petal flavours. Assertive acidity helps promote a dry-ish finish. Good purity and an ethereal texture."
